The Index

The Market.

SipStory tracks the shelf price of fixed baskets of Australian wine over time — a read on where the market actually is, not just what's on sale this week. Built from the real prices we log every day.

The basket

A fixed set of Barossa & Eden Valley Shiraz, single 750mL bottles, spanning entry to icon. The index follows the median, so neither a $9 cleanskin nor a $300 trophy bottle swings it. Constituents we're currently tracking:

How it's built

Fixed basket, median (not average), observed shelf price — never a retailer's RRP, which is routinely inflated. Every price is normalised to a 750mL equivalent and reconciled across shops, with one reading per week. The Price Index uses the regular shelf price; the Glut Barometer uses the promotion share off the same data.

Today the index is built from Australia's independent retailers — the data we log cleanly every day. Dan Murphy's and Liquorland set the market's reference prices but block scraping; we're folding them in through a consented browser panel (opt-in, your own browser, public prices), not by evading anyone's defences. Coverage is always disclosed: a transparent sample, never a black box.
